Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR) and Global Citizenship Education (GCE) are among the action lines of municipalities and regions in international cooperation and decentralised cooperation. Discover more during the session. This session is organised on the occassion of the European Days of Local Solidarity (EDLS) Campaign, which is coordinated by PLATFORMA and its partners all over Europe.
The first part of the session will be dedicated to present the PLATFORMA publication “Municipalities and regions take action on global citizenship education, the road towards 2030“. The presentation will be followed by reactions from different local and regional governments and their associations. The session will end with an exchange time with the audience and civil society organisations.
According to the UNESCO, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) provides the tools to enhance citizens critical thinking about the interconnections between local and global challenges and empower them to take responsibility to bring about change for a more just, sustainable and equal world.Nowadays, Global Citizenship Education coexist with other terms like Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR), Global Education (GE) and Education for Sutainable Development (ESD) among others.
At the EU level, the European Commission DEAR programme values the role played by local and regional governments together with civil society organisations in raising citizen’s awareness on global sustainable development issues and global challenges (like global inequalities and the climate emergency). The new NDICI- Global Europe instrument will offers to municipalities the possibility to implement projects aiming to raise citizens’ awarenes on global challenges.
In this context, this session will be a moment of exchange and learning between municipalities located in different part of Europe, civil society organisations and the audience on DEAR. The links with the international action of municipalities and decentralised cooperation will also be analysed. There are many different types of decentralised cooperation as well as modalities, flows and types of intervention. Campaigns, advocacy actions and education projects are some of them and are also at the core of DEAR activities.
